Typically when I think of lighthouses, it’s in the summer. This weekend, I went out to Grand Haven and shot this in all its icy glory. The lighthouse is in the Grand Haven State Park.
If you’ve never been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, you really need to make the trip. It’s another world up there, a trip back in time. I took this in Houghton a few years ago with my film camera on an overcast day.
Some of my ancestry is from Cornwall, UK and were miners. One of the things I found fascinating about the U.P. was all of the mining history. This coming summer I plan on spending some mega time up there taking photos.
I took this shot at the Lubbers farm on the Northwest side of Grand Rapids on Luce Street. They are members of a group of local West Michigan farmers who have joined together to promote a sustainable local food system. The group is called the Greater Grand Rapids Food Systems Council, click here for a link to their site to find out more about this great organization.
I took this at the flour plant in Lowell when I was on the way to Lansing. I also took some pictures of our capitol building today, while the legislature was pondering the state budget. I’ll be adding a Lansing pic Friday.
I know a lot of people who have moved to the Byron Center and Caledonia area. After driving around there, I can see why. If you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon drive, cruise out to 100th Street and drive through the farmland, this is one of the barns I saw while checking it out. By the way, if you have any great ideas for fall color tour pics, please make a comment and let me know. I want to get some pics from all over the state and appreciate your suggestions. (Thanks!)
Annie, you’ve got to go take some pictures on 100th Street.” I finally listened to my mom and this is the result. I took this on a little side road off 100th Street in the Caledonia/Byron Center area. It’s a beautiful area to drive around. Thanks, Ma!
I had intended to post this sooner, but was delayed due to my business trip to Chicago yesterday. Yep, yesterday when I encountered tornadoes and straight line winds, it was very interesting driving. That was one mighty looking storm that packed a powerful punch. I grew up over there and never saw anything like this before.
Anyhoo, this is another view from that pretty little spot along the river in Lowell.
Here’s a peaceful hidden spot along the water in Lowell. Little stairs lead down to a small sitting area along the river at this spot right here (click for google map.)
I’ve always found the drive from Grand Rapids to Lansing incredibly boring… that is until I found this back road route and now I LOVE it! Almost the entire trip is dotted with beautiful farmland, small towns and old structures like this one. Even the clouds were pretty this day, we needed the rain bad.
I like the drive down Price Road. The road changes names several times, but you can see from this link where to go if you want to take the back roads all the way to Lansing.
I’ve never seen any place like this and couldn’t decide which pic to run because I liked them both so much. So, you guessed it, you get two pictures in one night. For more info, and a link to where I took this, please check my entry just before this one.
