Red Barn on the horizon
I captured this shot of a peaceful red barn, just as the sun was going down.

I was looking for something to do with my friend Sandy and she was game to scope out potential places for photos. She mentioned her grandparents used to live near 10oth Street in the Byron Center area and thought that since it was on high ground, we might find something nice. She was right.

Old barns and farmhouses fascinate me and this one caught my eye. The farmhouse on the site was abandoned with a big “No Trespassing. Trespassers will be prosecuted” sign posted. Luckily, I got my shot anyway!

Amazing Sculpture at the Frederik Meijer Gardens

The Frederik Meijer Gardens will be a venue for ArtPrize this year. Artprize starts September 22 at 6PM. I’m planning on going to downtown Grand Rapids to start scoping out the work that is already up (by the way, this sculpture is not an ArtPrize entry.

The sails come down after a day on the water

There’s boat harbors everywhere in Michigan that look just like this as the sun sets. I took this photo in Muskegon after a relaxing day of sailing. Being able to escape like this makes every day feel like a vacation. Post & HDR photo by Ann Teliczan

Wandering through the Fields.
Wandering through the Fields.

I was wandering through the county and had to stop to take this photo of this little farm on a hillside, I love the little windmill peeking over the roof.

Hopefully this is the last shot I put up here this spring that doesn’t have LOTS of green in it. The trees are starting to bud, it’s warm and sunny and the air smells like life. Welcome back spring, I’m so glad to see you again.

Downtown Grand Rapids from the Rooftop at Sunset
Downtown Grand Rapids from the Rooftop at Sunset

So, this is where I was the other evening. I took this photo from the new helipad at Spectrum Health at sunset. I felt a little like Mary Poppins overlooking the city, only not quite as brave. I love heights but feel a little quesy until I get used to it, so I guess I’ll have to get more experience in high places!

Oval Beach, Saugatuck MI
Oval Beach, Saugatuck MI

If you try real hard, I’ll bet you can feel the sand between your toes, smell the fresh air blowing off the water and hear the surf pounding the shore. It’s no wonder Oval Beach was voted as one of the best beaches in the world.

Supposedly, we’re going to get blasted with arctic air and a snowstorm tomorrow… I hope not, but just in case, I’ll be thinking of summer, sun and sugar sand Michigan beaches.

By the way, I saw Clint Eastwood’s new movie, Gran Torino this weekend. It was shot in a decaying urban Detroit area. I loved the movie, in fact it’s one of my all time favorites. But after seeing it, I wished that there were more positive images of the Detroit area represented in the media. Yes there are parts of Detroit that are like this, but the majority of Detroit is an interesting, unique city with tremendous talent and people with a survivor spirit. I go there a lot on business and love the diversity and openness of the businesses and people there. Nothing ever stays the same and that goes for a depressed economy, I truly believe that our state is on its way back.

Big Mouth Bass at Sunset
Big Mouth Bass at Sunset

I’ve been very negligent in writing posts on Michigan’s tremendous fishing opportunities. This big mouth bass was caught just after sunset off a dock at Gun Lake in Shelbyville. I’ll be trying to come up with more fish tales for you, Michigan is full of them.

Grand Rapids Condo Living
Grand Rapids Condo Living

There has been a surge of people seeking condos in downtown Grand Rapids and it’s easy to see why when you spend some time in one of them. A lot of the condos have rooftop common areas where residents can enjoy the cityscape like I did on this warm summer night.

Old Michigan Farm
So I’m driving along on Sayles Avenue near Lowell (see previous post for Google link) and see this old, old farm. It almost looked abandoned, but I think someone still lives here. I had to walk through a field to get this angle and am always a little nervous when I do that in case the owners have a dog that hates intruders. Fortunately, I got my shot without a problem. The place kind of has a haunted feeling about it and after I took this photo, I noticed there is a glow over the white barn. I’m sure it’s just a lens flare but I think it’s cool.
