Grand Haven, MI Beach winter cold
Grand Haven... just to the left of the lighthouse

The beach in Grand Haven sports this wonderful pier that connects with a pretty red lighthouse, so naturally that’s the photo everyone takes. Last time I was in Grand Haven I just wanted a different shot and this is what I came up with. It was really, really cold out there… can you tell?

Grand Rapids Skyline 2011
The Grand Rapids Skyline after all the snow.

I was snowbound all day yesterday due to the Great Blizzard of 2011. But being snowbound aint how I hang, so I loaded up into my car and as my husband sent me off with “Don’t get stuck,” I raced off to beat the sunset.

There was about 2 feet of snow which had drifted as high as our gutters in some areas, but it just didn’t look that impressive on camera. What to do? I decided it was time to update my Grand Rapids skyline photo, it has changed profoundly in the last year with the completion of the Helen DeVos Children’s hospital and the MSU College of Human Medicine Grand Rapids campus.

Do you see the snow? It’s there and it’s deep. By the way, I didn’t get stuck. Well actually I did get stuck. 4 or 5 times, but managed to work my way out without a tow truck (or calling for help to get out.) Happy winter!

UPDATE:  The Electric Forest Festival was announced today from June 30 – July 3, 2010, at the Double J ranch in Rothbury, MI. They have a website and facebook page. Not much detail at either place yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

If you’ve been following my blog for long, you may have noticed I’m a big Rothbury fan. I was lucky enough to score a photo pass to Rothbury 2009 and Rothbury 2008. It was an over the top experience musically, professionally and personally. Loved it. As many, I was disappointed when there was no Rothbury 2010, and wondered if that would be it for the music festival.

However… reliable sources are indicating to me that Madison House has been quietly applying for permits and other behind the scenes details necessary to make it happen in 2011. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I think there will be a Rothbury 2011. For more info, here’s some links for you to learn more:

Wow that's a big horse
This horse is majestic.

In Amish country, you won’t drive far without seeing huge, magnificent horses. Even though it was bitterly cold outside, I had to get out of the car and take this photo. It was so cold my fingers felt a little tingly after I got back in. This field actually had quite a few horses that aren’t pictured in this shot who were curious about what I was up to and came to check me out. When I was done, they all kicked up their heels and ran back to the big barn in the background.

Red Barn on the horizon
I captured this shot of a peaceful red barn, just as the sun was going down.

I was looking for something to do with my friend Sandy and she was game to scope out potential places for photos. She mentioned her grandparents used to live near 10oth Street in the Byron Center area and thought that since it was on high ground, we might find something nice. She was right.

Old barns and farmhouses fascinate me and this one caught my eye. The farmhouse on the site was abandoned with a big “No Trespassing. Trespassers will be prosecuted” sign posted. Luckily, I got my shot anyway!

West Michigan rolling farmland near 100th Street in Byron Center

Christmas is over and the days are getting longer… as far as I’m concerned, we’re on the other side of winter. I know that may be optimistic thinking, but it’s one of the mind games I play with myself to get through the Michigan cold.

I digress, this blog is all about Michigan sweetness and that it is, even during winter. Michigan farmland is abundant here and when it’s not nurturing us in the summer months, it’s resting over the winter. I love driving in the country taking in the old barns, farm animals and rich scenery.

"Goodness," my latest work over at ArtistThoughts.com

Ever wonder what I do besides take HDR photos and blog about Michigan? For my work that doesn’t fall within the “Michigan” category, I have another blog called Artist Thoughts. I hope you’ll check it out every once in a while to see what else I’m up to.

Historic Stone Archway
Where this path leads, I know not.

If you drive around the Leelanau Peninsula for any length of time, you’ll happen upon  historic looking little places that make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. I have no idea what is at the end of this trail. I do know that I think this is cool. I want an arch like this over my driveway!

It’s private property and I really wanted to go back there, I’m imagining some big old haunted mansion, what do you think?

Historic old barn
A historic old barn off M-22.

I was in Glen Arbor today and took some hdr photos of old barns. Even with the leaves off the trees, I love this place. If you’d like to see lots of rustic old historic barns, the drive on M-22 is a must.

Whipping down the road on a Buell motorcycle.

You don’t have to be in Michigan for long to figure out that this is a great place to ride around on a motorcycle. For about 6 months of the year that is. The scenic winding roads, trips to the beach and back country roads all add up to a lot of fun.

This has been a great year for bikers, it seems like the season was longer than usual. And, no, I’m not a biker myself (too afraid of the other drivers on the road). But it sure looks like a blast.
