Wow, That’s A Big Horse!

Wow that's a big horse

This horse is majestic.

In Amish country, you won’t drive far without seeing huge, magnificent horses. Even though it was bitterly cold outside, I had to get out of the car and take this photo. It was so cold my fingers felt a little tingly after I got back in. This field actually had quite a few horses that aren’t pictured in this shot who were curious about what I was up to and came to check me out. When I was done, they all kicked up their heels and ran back to the big barn in the background.

Amish Fish Fry Secret

Amish barn with Amish Buggies

We had a feeling we were at the right place when we saw the horse drawn Amish carriages outside.

Have you ever been to Amish country? I hadn’t been to an Amish restaurant since my parents had taken me to one as a child. The food was delicious and the atmosphere is appreciably different. When my friend Peggy and I were exploring the backwoods of Amish country near Lakeview, we heard about an Amish fish fry that night. We jumped at the chance to go… So here’s the dilly…

First off, it’s all word of mouth, the only indication that there is a fish fry at the actual location is that there are cars and horse drawn buggies outside. Plus, you need the address, there’s not even a sign at the road. When we arrived at the fish fry, we were greeted with the sight of this red building on the left, on the right was a small 2-story white farmhouse and a bunch of parked cars by the house. As we entered through the back door, we were greeted by Amish women dressed in long dresses with white aprons and hats.

Some of the patrons directed us to a room with long wood tables and bench style seating. Everyone sat together and the servers came along every so often to provide refills of delicious home fried fish, baked or fried potatoes, cole slaw, home made biscuits and all the fixings. There was even a great selection of pies to choose from. As we left, there was a metal box out for cash donations to pay for the meal. Your choice of how much to pay.

The fish fry is held on the 3rd Friday of every month from 3:30 pm – 8:00 pm, in addition, breakfast is available on Saturdays from 7:00 am – noon. The location is at 5882 Stutzman Drive, Lakeview, MI. Here’s a google map link to the location. Turn onto the dirt drive and pass the first house on the left. Continue until you see the red building pictured here, the fish fry is in the white 2 story house in the back (on the right).

I have more photos coming of the Amish community, so I hope you will check back to see more soon.

A High Spot

Red Barn on the horizon

I captured this shot of a peaceful red barn, just as the sun was going down.

I was looking for something to do with my friend Sandy and she was game to scope out potential places for photos. She mentioned her grandparents used to live near 10oth Street in the Byron Center area and thought that since it was on high ground, we might find something nice. She was right.

Old barns and farmhouses fascinate me and this one caught my eye. The farmhouse on the site was abandoned with a big “No Trespassing. Trespassers will be prosecuted” sign posted. Luckily, I got my shot anyway!

We’re On the Other Side of Winter

Filed under: HDR Photography — teliczan @ 11:34 pm

West Michigan rolling farmland near 100th Street in Byron Center

Christmas is over and the days are getting longer… as far as I’m concerned, we’re on the other side of winter. I know that may be optimistic thinking, but it’s one of the mind games I play with myself to get through the Michigan cold.

I digress, this blog is all about Michigan sweetness and that it is, even during winter. Michigan farmland is abundant here and when it’s not nurturing us in the summer months, it’s resting over the winter. I love driving in the country taking in the old barns, farm animals and rich scenery.

Mommy, When Can We Go Play at the Hospital?

Filed under: HDR Photography — Tags: — teliczan @ 12:59 am

The Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is decked out with lighthearted mosiacs that will make you smile.

Not many things are more difficult than an ailing child needing hospitalization. Spectrum Health’s new Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is an amazing place that will surely make things easier for sick children and their loved ones. There’s no way my photos can do it justice so, just trust me when I say that this is a world class hospital with the best of the best of everything. And, West Michigan’s philanthropic community donated much of what makes this place so special.

The floors sparkle, there’s an interactive wall in the lobby, even a rooftop park. Beyond the environment, is of course the actual health care that will be provided here. The facility has the best of the best equipment and providers to make this all come together. This hospital is going to be another place that makes Grand Rapids a destination point, this time in the health care arena.

The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital officially opens on 1/11/11.

Even the waiting room lobby's are full of life. Note the bubble wall in the background.

I Wanted to Drive Down This Road, But Alas, It Was Private Property

Historic Stone Archway

Where this path leads, I know not.

If you drive around the Leelanau Peninsula for any length of time, you’ll happen upon  historic looking little places that make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. I have no idea what is at the end of this trail. I do know that I think this is cool. I want an arch like this over my driveway!

It’s private property and I really wanted to go back there, I’m imagining some big old haunted mansion, what do you think?

It’s Always Pretty in the Leelanau Peninsula

Historic old barn

A historic old barn off M-22.

I was in Glen Arbor today and took some hdr photos of old barns. Even with the leaves off the trees, I love this place. If you’d like to see lots of rustic old historic barns, the drive on M-22 is a must.

Maybe A Chance for One More Ride on the Buell this Weekend

Whipping down the road on a Buell motorcycle.

You don’t have to be in Michigan for long to figure out that this is a great place to ride around on a motorcycle. For about 6 months of the year that is. The scenic winding roads, trips to the beach and back country roads all add up to a lot of fun.

This has been a great year for bikers, it seems like the season was longer than usual. And, no, I’m not a biker myself (too afraid of the other drivers on the road). But it sure looks like a blast.

Michigan Fall Colors and Ramblings

Fall colors in Michigan

Walking in color.

I love fall photography because of all the brilliant color, being out in nature and smelling the crisp air, and walking through the woods kicking the leaves. This tree stood out in my quest for “the perfect fall photo.” It’s in Ada, MI along the new bike path on Bailey.

On another note, I want to thank everyone who stops by and visits my blog. And especially thank those of you who take the time to make comments. It makes the time I spend on this very rewarding for me. I check my blog stats every day and have noticed that I’m getting more and more new visitors all the time. Michigan Sweet Spot is near having 300,ooo page views.

When I first started this, sometimes there would only be one or two visitors in a day (in other words, my mom and dad!). Anyway, thanks again and keep on coming and telling your friends about MichiganSweetSpot, you’re appreciated!
