Shhh! Do Not Disturb the Baby Bluebirds!

Bluebirds in a nest

These sweet little bluebirds don't even have their eyes open yet.

I LOVE wild birds, and baby bluebirds are my favorite. Every spring they flock to an ornamental fruit tree in my back yard and pick away at the remaining berries on it that the squirrels couldn’t get at.

Don’t even ask me how I got this picture, but I promise you nobody got hurt and all the baby birds were fine.

On another note, I think spring is finally here. Flowers are popping up everywhere and the snow is melted. I can’t wait to take pictures of something other than winter scenes.

Michigan Ice Storm Consolation Prize

Michigan Ice storm with icy trees

Ice storm diamonds are a trees best friend.

Early this morning I was greeted by two messages, one by Inge, and one by my mom. Both of whom wanted to make sure that I knew I would be missing a great chance to take a picture for this blog. As my mom put it, “there’s ice diamonds on the trees.” Amazingly, it’s been that way all day, which is somewhat of a consolation for me because I am sick and tired of winter. Actually, literally sick. I have a cold. I’m thinking of venturing out to take more pictures because it’s just so pretty out right now.

Who Knew Farm Silos Were So Pretty?

Does it look cold to you? It was!

So… when my friend Peggy and I were getting lost in Amish land looking for the “perfect Amish photo” I saw this very striking farm and had to take a picture. Let me tell you though, it was so incredibly cold, I could feel my fingers and toes freezing even though I was bundled up to the hilt.

I think it was worth it though!

She Saved My Little Pixie

Richelle Smith Safe Harbor Animal Hospital in Grand Rapids

Dr. Richelle Smith of the Safe Harbor Animal Hospital with Pixie

When I first pulled up to the Safe Harbor Animal Hospital, I noticed that the blinds on the window of the vet office were ripped to shreds… interesting. I wondered why and imagined some crazed cat clawing its way up the window. I got out of my car and took my very sick little toy fox terrier, Pixie inside. I had been told by my friend Janine who has the inside scoop on everything, that Dr. Richelle Smith of the Safe Harbor Animal Hospital was the best. I hoped so because I was starting to wonder if Pixie was going to pull out of this. She had already been to 3 appointments at a different veterinary hospital over the last week with no answers forthcoming and she was going downhill fast. To make matters worse, my friend Peggy had lost her sweet little wire fox terrier, Asta, a few months earlier. Asta had experienced nearly identical symptoms and every vet he had been to was baffled by what was making him sick. Pixie was losing her spirit, along with everything she ate or drank and at 8 1/2 lbs. didn’t have any weight left to lose.

Once inside, I was immediately struck by how peaceful, clean and nice smelling the office was. And that the staff was very kind and helpful. Dr. Smith was great, she spent a LOT of time with me answering questions and going into detail about what could be wrong, what my options were and which ones she recommended and why. During treatment she called every day to see how Pixie was doing and to make sure everything was okay. Fast forward to a month later, Pixie is doing great.

And, about the blinds, it turns out that Dr. Smith has a big heart and rescues animals. She had recently rescued and treated a dog (Bella Boo) from Tennessee that needed medical care and brings Bella Boo to work with her every day. One day, when Dr. Smith left the office without her new furry friend, she tore up the shades in the good doc’s office in an attempt to go along. Here’s a link to the Safe Harbor Animal Hospital.

The Photo No One Takes in Grand Haven

Grand Haven, MI Beach winter cold

Grand Haven... just to the left of the lighthouse

The beach in Grand Haven sports this wonderful pier that connects with a pretty red lighthouse, so naturally that’s the photo everyone takes. Last time I was in Grand Haven I just wanted a different shot and this is what I came up with. It was really, really cold out there… can you tell?

Grand Rapids Skyline and The Big Snowstorm of 2011

Grand Rapids Skyline 2011

The Grand Rapids Skyline after all the snow.

I was snowbound all day yesterday due to the Great Blizzard of 2011. But being snowbound aint how I hang, so I loaded up into my car and as my husband sent me off with “Don’t get stuck,” I raced off to beat the sunset.

There was about 2 feet of snow which had drifted as high as our gutters in some areas, but it just didn’t look that impressive on camera. What to do? I decided it was time to update my Grand Rapids skyline photo, it has changed profoundly in the last year with the completion of the Helen DeVos Children’s hospital and the MSU College of Human Medicine Grand Rapids campus.

Do you see the snow? It’s there and it’s deep. By the way, I didn’t get stuck. Well actually I did get stuck. 4 or 5 times, but managed to work my way out without a tow truck (or calling for help to get out.) Happy winter!

Rothbury 2011, Me Thinks it will Happen

UPDATE:  The Electric Forest Festival was announced today from June 30 – July 3, 2010, at the Double J ranch in Rothbury, MI. They have a website and facebook page. Not much detail at either place yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

If you’ve been following my blog for long, you may have noticed I’m a big Rothbury fan. I was lucky enough to score a photo pass to Rothbury 2009 and Rothbury 2008. It was an over the top experience musically, professionally and personally. Loved it. As many, I was disappointed when there was no Rothbury 2010, and wondered if that would be it for the music festival.

However… reliable sources are indicating to me that Madison House has been quietly applying for permits and other behind the scenes details necessary to make it happen in 2011. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I think there will be a Rothbury 2011. For more info, here’s some links for you to learn more:

Wow, That’s A Big Horse!

Wow that's a big horse

This horse is majestic.

In Amish country, you won’t drive far without seeing huge, magnificent horses. Even though it was bitterly cold outside, I had to get out of the car and take this photo. It was so cold my fingers felt a little tingly after I got back in. This field actually had quite a few horses that aren’t pictured in this shot who were curious about what I was up to and came to check me out. When I was done, they all kicked up their heels and ran back to the big barn in the background.

Amish Fish Fry Secret

Amish barn with Amish Buggies

We had a feeling we were at the right place when we saw the horse drawn Amish carriages outside.

Have you ever been to Amish country? I hadn’t been to an Amish restaurant since my parents had taken me to one as a child. The food was delicious and the atmosphere is appreciably different. When my friend Peggy and I were exploring the backwoods of Amish country near Lakeview, we heard about an Amish fish fry that night. We jumped at the chance to go… So here’s the dilly…

First off, it’s all word of mouth, the only indication that there is a fish fry at the actual location is that there are cars and horse drawn buggies outside. Plus, you need the address, there’s not even a sign at the road. When we arrived at the fish fry, we were greeted with the sight of this red building on the left, on the right was a small 2-story white farmhouse and a bunch of parked cars by the house. As we entered through the back door, we were greeted by Amish women dressed in long dresses with white aprons and hats.

Some of the patrons directed us to a room with long wood tables and bench style seating. Everyone sat together and the servers came along every so often to provide refills of delicious home fried fish, baked or fried potatoes, cole slaw, home made biscuits and all the fixings. There was even a great selection of pies to choose from. As we left, there was a metal box out for cash donations to pay for the meal. Your choice of how much to pay.

The fish fry is held on the 3rd Friday of every month from 3:30 pm – 8:00 pm, in addition, breakfast is available on Saturdays from 7:00 am – noon. The location is at 5882 Stutzman Drive, Lakeview, MI. Here’s a google map link to the location. Turn onto the dirt drive and pass the first house on the left. Continue until you see the red building pictured here, the fish fry is in the white 2 story house in the back (on the right).

I have more photos coming of the Amish community, so I hope you will check back to see more soon.

A High Spot

Red Barn on the horizon

I captured this shot of a peaceful red barn, just as the sun was going down.

I was looking for something to do with my friend Sandy and she was game to scope out potential places for photos. She mentioned her grandparents used to live near 10oth Street in the Byron Center area and thought that since it was on high ground, we might find something nice. She was right.

Old barns and farmhouses fascinate me and this one caught my eye. The farmhouse on the site was abandoned with a big “No Trespassing. Trespassers will be prosecuted” sign posted. Luckily, I got my shot anyway!
