Right after the gates opened at Rothbury. Yesterday around 6PM.

The sky may have been gloomy when the Rothbury gates opened but everyone was there to have fun and at least it didn’t rain yesterday. It looks like we’ll have the perfect Michigan summer weather here for the rest of the weekend.

As I was walking through the festival, I noticed a surprisingly good selection of food and lots, and lots of vendors with some pretty cool stuff to buy.

Lotus was totally jamming at the Rothbury Music Festival last night, and the crowd ate it up. Light sticks were flying through the air, everyone was dancing and there was just an overall great jive in the air. Here’s a link to the Lotus MySpace page, there’s some great music here.

Sherwood Forest Is Even Better in 09
Sherwood Forest Is Even Better in 09

Sherwood Forest at Rothbury 09 is even more wildly spectacular than it was last year. For anyone who was at Rothbury

A few seconds later, same forest, different lights
A few seconds later, same forest, different lights

Music Festival in 2008, I know that may be hard to imagine, but it’s true. There have been additions to the fantasy land. What you’re looking at here is a pine forest that has been TOTALLY tricked up with light, special effects, hammocks and floating objects hovering over the woods.

While I was walking through the woods, I was listening to the comments and pretty much everyone was fascinated. I’ve posted two photos here of the same scene that were taken seconds apart from each other.

For such a large event, Rothbury was relaxing and fun.
For such a large event, Rothbury was relaxing, fun and exciting all rolled into one.

When I took this photo last year at Rothbury, it was just getting started and I was wondering what I was in for. I was immediately struck with how creative the event organizer, Madison House, was. There were hammocks, tents, and just random fun things every where. There was even “Gangsta Yoga” in the morning. Some of the headliners Rothbury 09 features includes Bob Dylan, The Dead, String Cheese Incident, Willie Nelson and Family, The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule and much, much more. You can find out all about at their website here. When I was there last year I talked with people from all over the country who regularly attended music festivals and nearly every one of them told me this was the best they had ever been to. I hope to see you there too this year!

Rothbury Music Festival Woods / Daytime

Hey there, for all you folks wondering if Rothbury 2009 will be a reality or not, I just got official word. Rothbury Music Festival will happen  July 2 – 5, 2009 and will be even better this year. Here’s a link to the official website for the Rothbury Music Festival, they are still working out details of the lineup. The above is a photo of the woods during the daytime. At night Sherwood Forest was lit up with black lights and like nothing I’ve ever seen before… fun! Here’s a link to lots of HDR photos I took at Rothbury in 2008, when you get to the bottom of the page, be sure to click the “older posts” link, which includes shots of John Mayer, Snoop Dog and Trey Anastasio. I’ll be getting a photo pass again this year, so stay tuned.

Charles Walker and the Dynamites were my introduction to the Rothbury Music Festival. I was backstage and saw Charles Walker walking towards the stage from his trailer before the show. When he hit the stage, he turned into a funk powerhouse.  If you get a chance to see them, take it! Here’s a link to their Myspace page.

Tea Leaf Green was another group I’m glad I “discovered” at the Rothbury Music Festival… hey Chris, I think you’d like these guys, they sound like a better version of early REO. Here’s a link to the Tea Leaf Green Website.

Just one more of the details that made Rothbury fun were these guys walking around on stilts.
