Those of us lucky enough to call metro Grand Rapids home have discovered this is a great place to raise children. The city is big enough to feature national acts like Hannah Montana (on December 6 at the Van Andel Arena), yet still offer some of the world’s finest beaches, lush farmland, and abundant state parks with woods and wildlife.

  1. This is the main reason why I moved here.

I grew up in Detroit, but moved to Los Angeles when I graduated from high school.

When my older boys were 4, 2 and newborn, I decided that Los Angeles was no place to raise children, packed everything up and moved to West Michigan. I’ve never regretted it. The clean air, the neighborhood environment, the low crime rate, the good schools, all these plus what you mention above make West Michigan a prime area to raise kids.

  2. Thanks for the comment Dee, and by the way, that was a nice write up the Grand Rapids Press did on you.

  4. “Some of the world’s finest beaches”? Michigan?

    Heh heh. Okay then.

    • Mikey – Thanks for the comment, it’s just this kind of opinion of Michigan that is my reason for doing this blog. Michigan beaches regularly make Top 10 beach lists. The sugar sand coastline combined with our massive freshwater coastline and tons of inland lakes truly does make this a beautiful place. Beaches that I have found to be particularly beautiful are Torch Lake, the Charleviox area, Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Little Glen and Big Glen Lakes in Glen Arbor to name a few.
